Dear AHSME friends,
The 1997 AHSME was again well participated in North Carolina with more than 8,200 exams ordered and almost 7000 students participating, and 146 participating schools across the state. We are delighted that North Carolina had 139 honor roll students. This represents a little over 2.1 percent of the total.
Thanks to each of the following:
All exam managers for registering, administering and, most of all, for doing the super teaching which enables students to develop their problem solving abilities.
Terry Hartman of the UNCC computer center for his great help putting this report together.
Walter Mientka and all of his staff in Nebraska for doing the registration, mailing, and centralized scoring.
Hoechst-Celanese Corporation for sponsoring the beautiful AMC plaques to be presented at the state NCCTM meeting in Charlotte on October 23-25.
Congratulations to the top schools in their divisions and their exam managers:
4A NC School of Science & Math Julie Graves
3A T. C. Roberson Ed Osada
2A Southwest Guilford Richard Welch
1A Lejeune High Rose Brown
Independent Providence Day Rhea Caldwell
tie Charlotte Area Home Schools Susan Schaeffer

Recognizing the need to involve younger mathematically talented students, the Committee on American Mathematics Competitions (CAMC) has approved the enlargement of the US Mathematical Olympiad pool as follows: First group: Top 120 students, all grades;
Second group: next 10 students in grade 11 and below; Third group: next 10 students in grade 10 and below; Fourth group: next 10 students in grade 9 and below; Fifth group: one student from each state, one student from the territories, and one student from APO/FPO schools not represented above.
Next year, there will be no AHSME window, and no need to collect exams after the test. Also, solutions may be given out immediately. Students will have to sign a statement agreeing to discuss the test over the phone or internet, etc.
