Charlotte Teachers’ Circle

For the 2007-2008 academic year, the plans for the Charlotte Teachers' Circle are greatly expanded from the 2006-2007 year. The circle is intended for middle school teachers.

The benefits to each participant include:

  1. Renewal credit for regular participation. We will be applying for grant money to cover a number of expenses.  If successful we will be able to pay tuition so that participants might receive graduate credit.
  2. A small stipend, including a special stipend for work on  Saturday, November 17, when middle school students from Mecklenburg and surrounding counties will participate in a Math Day at UNCC during which they will take the AMC 8 and attend problem solving sessions with the CTC participants.
  3. Dinner meetings eight times during the year provided by grant money.
  4. A great collection of attractive problems and problem solving strategies.
  5. A network of fellow problem solvers.

Meetings of the CTC will take place twice monthly. Harold Reiter, Gabor Hetyei, and Jeong-Lim Chae, and perhaps others will prepare the problems and lead the meetings. High school teachers are welcome to attend, but the problems are intended for middle school students and teachers. Each CTC participant will be expected to coach or to assist in coaching a MATHCOUNTS team at his/her school. MATHCOUNTS handbooks will be available at the first meeting in late September.
