UNCCharlotte Super Competition Mathematics Results, March 2000
The Mathematics Department teams with the Chemistry and Physics departments to host the Annual UNCC Super Competitions Day during our Spring break. The math-science center administers the overall competition. In math we offer only a comprehensive division contest (Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II are offered at Charlotte Country Day School in 1996-97). Students who score in the top 7% of our roughly 420 participants qualify for the state runoff at NCSSM in April. Top students both at the UNCC site and at the runoff are eligible for college scholarships.
The exam is put together by a committee of six in the department. Copies of the exam and the solutions are provided to the sponsors during the testing period. The department recently signed on with EducAid of California to produce and sell copies of the 1000 plus problem database of more than 15 years of problems.
The 2000 competition attracted students from 23 schools from the region. The total number of competitors in mathematics was 414. Twenty-nine of these qualify for the state runoff competition in Durham on April 27.
